Welcome to the website for our new series, which releases in the end of September of this year. It’s a very odd story. I’ve written the first draft in approximately two months in between Kate books and I loved working on it. The first hint of trouble came when Gordon edited it and took to calling it “rustic fantasy” as opposed to urban fantasy.
When I showed to our agent, she loved it, but she wasn’t quite sure what it was. Then our editor at Ace, Anne Sowards, looked at it. She called back next day saying that she wasn’t quite sure what it was, but she wanted to buy it. The art department was excited about the idea (and made the fantastic cover, which I love to death and it’s my precious) but they also weren’t quite sure how to classify it.
A few days ago a prominent reviewer emailed me to say that she enjoyed the book a great deal but wasn’t sure how to classify it either.
:drumroll:
I now present the unclassifiable ON THE EDGE. It’s like Twinkies. Everybody likes it, nobody is 100% sure what it is.
So how is the Edge different from the violent world of Kate Daniels? Well, it’s definitely more of a romance. The book is just about split 50/50 between urban fantasy and paranormal romance, which makes it so hard to classify.
Then there is the heroine. Kate Daniels is far from ordinary. She’s been there, slain that, and she’s pretty hard to faze. Rose hasn’t been anywhere. She very much wanted to travel and do daring things, but her father had taken off after her mother’s death, leaving her responsible for her two much younger brothers. Rose has a unique family and unlike Kate, who has no responsibilities, she has to take care of her relatives.
What about the hero? Well, Curran and Declan have two things in common: they both happen to be blond and they’re both arrogant asses who think they know better. The similarities end there. Curran assumed a huge responsibility for the Pack when he was fifteen, while Declan did his best to escape all responsibilities for the better part of his adult life, to the point of hiding from them by serving in an elite unit of Adrianglian army.
Kate Daniels series is about extraordinary people. The Edge is about ordinary people. They’re not larger than life, but I hope you’ll enjoy them all the same.
This sounds like it’s going to be a great series. I can’t wait until the first book comes out! Ya’ll are such amazing writers:)

So why isn’t this out yet…. glum sigh. I hate waiting.
Write faster! Publish faster! Faster, faster pussycat! Go GO GOOO!
Yes, more please! I have already had to reread this one multiple times… I am forced to by the fact that it is so great.
I loved this book, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes from here. Also loved the scene from the next Kate Daniels novel in the back!! Now i really can;t wait for it to come out.
Fantastic. I read it and then immediately read it again. I wanted to relive every experience and find nuances I may have missed. You amaze me.
And a YEAR until the next one? Oh dear.

I just read this book last night, in one sitting. I could not put it down. I loved it and can’t wait to read the next book in the series and could y’all maybe hurry that one along please? *G* In the meantime, since I am new to your books, I’m going to start buying your Kate Daniels books. *G*
Excellent book! Plot, character, and pacing were all terrific. Could not put it down after reading the first couple of chapters. Love the magical and non-magical living side by side with the majority none the wiser… Looking forward to Kate 4 and Edge 2 in 2010. Thanks for sharing of storytelling with us!
I just finished On the Edge and I loved it.
I was trying to wait until book 2 was out but kept hearing how good it was that I bought it from Amazon.
I could not put the Kindle down. Very entertaining. Great mythology!
Thanks for giving us another series until the new Magic comes out
I just started this last night. “Rustic” is a great description. I think it is like Twinkies….I’m not sure what it is but I love it and I always want more.
I just got the book and love it! rustic fantasy sounds good to me! *grins*
I was all upset that you were taking time out of writing the next kate book to write this one but as i love your books i thought i would buy it anyway. I loved it!! probably more than i love the kate books! Thank goodness its going to be a series of books too! I agree with Sandy247! write faster! This is way better than Twinkies!
I really enjoyed your book.
There were many things about it that were interesting and made a good read but the one thing that I found intriguing was Rose raising two boys who had special needs due to magic and her attempt to meet those challenges. The boys and their “quirks” were very interesting.
The only thing I wondered was why the grandmother did not live with them so she could help out raising the boys.
Thanks so much for the great story.
Read this on Kindle and really liked it. It’s not my usual read – smells like it could go into high fantasy rather than the urban kind I prefer – but Rose is as plucky and tough as any urban hero. Good luck with the series!
Simply want to say your article is awesome. The clearness in your post is simply impressive and i can take for granted you are an expert on this subject. Well with your permission allow me to grab your rss feed to keep up to date with succeeding post. Thanks a million and please keep up the gratifying work
What is “On the Edge”? It is a ‘fairy tale” in the classic mode. A heroine from a poverty setting, a Hero with a noble background, a villian who would destroy them both, three challenges, and ‘twu luv”. That is classic fairytale genre. But it is updated and so we may not recognize it, but the basics are all there. And all still classic archtypes, that speak to the subconscious..which is one reason, other than the fantastic writing, that we love the story.
I loved this book so much. I’ve already read it three times. Please write more.
Just finished reading your book…WOW..LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!! Now the only bummer thing I have to say is,how long until the next one?! Glad the two of you decided to write stories, that decision has given me endless hours of pleasure!! Looking forward (!!!!) to your next story!
First book of yours that I’ve read. What I enjoyed was your skillful turn of phrase (love the shotgun/walmart line) and the ability to view the same scene from two wildly different perspectives (“..and then a car tried to run me over.”)
Well, I lvoed it and see no need to classify it. I don’t like labels much anyway. Who needs them?
plz make another on the edge book about rose and Delcan
We all love them and want more of them
So.. I listen to the book and see one BIG PROBLEM…. You had the characters drinking Pepsi in GEORGIA. No one drink Pepsi here we only drink Coke… This must be corrected for the sake of the setting…Of if the book is labeled fantasy then I guess it is fanciful to think we Georgians drink Pepsi… Loved the book!!!
Loved the book. This is the first book of yours i read and I absolutely adored it. Im really not one for the tech + fantasy
combined storyline – Yet this book held my
attention until I finished it.As a ardent fan of fantasy in my opinion you have entered the ranks of Raymond Feist or Janny Wurtz. I cant hardly wait to read the next in the edge series
Big fan! I hope you write more than just two books in this series. I would love to read more with Rose and Declan in them. I definitely wanted to know more of William’s story though so not disappointed just hopeful for more greatness.
loved the book! Don’t know if I can wait until September for the next one.
I love this book. How many of you think that William is Rose’s half-brother? Raise your hand! He’s a changeling like Jack. Rose has no attraction to him and she doesn’t understand why. And, William feels drawn to her family and wants to be a part of it.
I loved your book it only took me one day to finish couldnt put it down at all!
I have read ALOT of books but i cant say i have read a book that has the romance and the horror show so well that every page was just waiting to be fliped so i could find out how everything was going to turn out in the end!
CANT WAIT FOR THE 2ND BOOK!
I wish the publisher would make hardcovers of Ilona Andrews books. I would buy them all in a heartbeat!
I also hope that someday this series will be made into film. The book is so visual and captivating. Viggo Mortensen would make a great Declan. Natalie Portman would make a great Rose. I can easily picture the scene when Georgie called out all the raised animals to let them go. That scene made me cry. In a film, it would be tremendous.
Great post, I bet loads of work and research went into this short article.
Read it twice in a row, and I’m now waiting for more !
